I saw this sign across the street from Oxford Manor, a public housing community with 172 units in northern Durham County.
This preparer is offering Refundo's tax advance loan product.
Because there is nothing free -- even a free tax advance -- I asked her much the tax preparation would cost. If I had a w-2 and I need an EIC, then how much can I expect to pay?"
Certainly, she is bearing some cost. Refundo charges a preparer $27 for its refund transfer bank product.
"No," she said, "I'll have to put all your information in to the computer. Then I can tell you, but not until then."
The advance was definitely her main selling point.
"We have $500," she said, "in less than 48 hours. The other guys have $200. So, you get more."
