At the end of the housing bubble, many Americans lost their homes when mobile home parks were cleared out to make room for speculative single-family site built real estate development.

The latest example is reported in Salt Lake City, where the Meadows Mobile Home Park in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, was cleared to make way for redevelopment.  The park had 150 slabs.  The developer intended to build 29 "mansions" on the land.

During the primaries, Clinton came out with some strong preventive measures for foreclosures, from a five-year moratorium on subprime loan features to low cost refinancing products.  Yet those might still fall short in some places, particularly where home prices values have plunged and thus refinancing is not a good option.

Since last week, it has become clear that our country has taken a new turn politically.  The White House is Blue.  Most of the Republican Congressional seats in the Upper Midwest and Northeast are gone.  Some say that the Republicans have become a marginal party devoted just to increasingly out-of-step constituents in the Southern United States.

This means that trailer parks no longer have to go under the name of "workforce housing."

Raleigh's Planning Commission has elected to wait on the rezoning application for Homestead Village Mobile Home Park.  As noted earlier, no study of the impacts of traffic has been completed.

The new rezoning would accommodate a proposal to build 1,355 new residences on the 38.58 acre tract in North Raleigh, near 540 and Capitol Boulevard.

What happens when 1355 new homes replace a mid-sized MH Park? The City of Raleigh, and its public schools, may find out soon.

In the analysis of impacts, provided by the City of Oaks' own planners, it emerges that rezoning the existing manufactured housing park will portend dramatic increases in the demand for schools:

The planning documents indicate that this rezoning would put an additional 599 new students in the area's schools.  Those students would most likely enter primary, middle, and secondary schools that are all either currently overcrowded or that would become so.

Fox Road Elementary would get the largest share of additional students.  Currently holding about 800 students, the planners project that Fox Road grows to 1168 students.  That is 120 percent of maximum capacity.

Wake Forest Middle only grows by about 90 students, but since it is already enrolled beyond its capacity, the new zoning hardly makes sense.

Last, Wakefield High also gets another 100 students.  It has the same profile as Wake Forest Middle -- already overcrowded.  Wakefield High draws students from Wakefield Plantation, the subdivision whose

Sometimes I will hear a person pan manufactured housing on the grounds of its cost. That usually surprises me. Prices on manufactured housing are generally far below that of site built homes. In fact, it is one of the virtues that makes the sector attractive as a tool in community development. So I want to hear what they mean when someone makes that claim.

This editorial from the Virginia Gazette, in Williamsburg, expresses the strange contradiction in public opinion.  The public wants more affordable housing.  They don't want more manufactured housing, at least not in their neighborhood.
